Abstract

The text is an introduction and a commentary on the publication of the article by the American researcher S. McReynolds that is published hereafter. The work of the American philologist is seen as an illustration of the possibility and productivity of rational scholar analysis of Dostoevsky's texts. It is emphasized that S. McRainolds proposed the demythologized language of discourse about faith, God, crime and punishment, revealing another way of speaking, that is entirely based on the classical methodology: to think about the text, proceeding from it.
