Abstract

The article is about the work by I.E. Repin on L.N. Tolstoy's portrait, which was firstly shown at the XXIX Travelling exhibition in 1901. The portrait caused hot disputes on the art, on the importance of L.N. Tolstoy for the Russian culture of the early XX century. Memoirs by I.E. Repin about L.N. Tolstoy, the painter's correspondence with V.V. Stasov, P.M. Tretyakov, reviews and responses of his contemporaries in the periodicals were used as the material for this article.
